What Does the 4th Mean to You?
I hope everyone had a great 4th of July. This special holiday is about celebrating our
nation’s independence. However, I would like to challenge you to consider it as your
organization’s personal independence day. Claim your business freedom by accepting
two fundamental business facts of life:
1. What you see around you is what YOU created by your thoughts and your
attitudes. If you don’t like what you see, change YOUR thinking process, your
attitude and your actions and what is around you will also change. I GUARANTEE IT!
2. The best kept secret to business success is: making a commitment to get
organized. It will take you “out of the ditch” and back on the road to success. In
other words, never underestimate the value of getting organized, having a success
plan and then working that plan! It costs you NOTHING to do, but it will cost you
everything if you don’t do it!
Working effectively with your local media is like having tons of money in the bank!
Getting the word out about your organization is like growing a garden – it is a
numbers game and an ongoing commitment to success. Let me give you a simple
example to demonstrate: Imagine you are at the doctor’s office waiting for your
appointment and you strike up a conversation with a stranger seated next to you.
During the pleasant conversation, you tell them about your organization, what you
do, what events are coming up and how you would like to personally invite them to
attend. They are excited about coming and after the pleasant 10 minute
conversation, you are called in for your appointment and you leave. During those 10
minutes, you introduced one new person to your organization and who knows, this
individual could become a volunteer, a donor or a board member in the years to
come. WELL DONE!
Now, imagine devoting the same 10 minutes to writing a press release that covered
exactly the same information and e-mailing it out to your press list of
TV/Radio/Newspaper/Community Newsletters/internet based E-zines and blogs. That
same 10 minutes, devoted to sharing your news through the media would now be
accessing hundreds or thousands of strangers, some or all of whom could become a
volunteer, a donor or a board member in the years to come.
In the first example, if the pleasant conversation in the doctor’s office doesn’t pan
out and the individual doesn’t show up to your event because they had a previous
engagement that they forgot about, you have a zero percent return on your
investment of 10 minutes. However, using the second example, if you access
100,000 people through your media list (on-line, off-line, print, radio and TV) and
only 1% of those people contact you in the future, that is 1000 people! On your
worst day, that is a great return on your investment.
Now, do you see the power of working WITH the media?
Yes, it will take you some time to build your e-mail media list but it is time well
invested in your future success because each e-mail address will represent hundreds
or thousands, or hundreds of thousands of people who could help you realize your
By the way, I STILL want you to chat with people everywhere you but I also want you
to see the power and the value in working with the media because it can increase
your results exponentially.
One more point I want to share with you about working with the media; one of the
most basic rules of marketing is the 3 - 5 rule. Put simply, this means that BEFORE
a consumer will take action on something new, they will need to read about it, see it,
hear about it or otherwise have access to it 3 - 5 times (or more) in a short period of
time (30 – 60 days). That means sending out press releases religiously every week,
doing PSA’s at the local media outlets, speaking at the local Chamber of Commerce
luncheons and/or schools, business meet & greets, etc., etc. In other words, working
WITH the media on a weekly basis is like putting plant food on your garden, it
enhances the growth rate and the garden’s success exponentially. While I’m sure
some of you are thinking, WHO HAS THE TIME to do that every week? I would
suggest to you after you see the math I did above on your ROI (return on
investment) that you can’t afford not to invest the time because your return is HUGE
and the financial cost is ZERO. A very famous speaker once asked an audience
member who was complaining he just didn't have enough hours in the day; how many
hours a day do you spend watching TV? The man answers 2 - 3 hours each evening.
The speaker asked... would you be willing to give up ONE of those hours to enhance
your skill sets? If you are SERIOUS about growing your non-profit, giving up one hour
of watching TV could produce a lot of pre-written press relases, tweets, FB posts and
more! OR, you could spend that same hour watching re-runs of your favorite show...
I think there is something, more important than believing: Action! The world is full of
dreamers, there aren't enough who will move ahead and begin to take concrete steps
to actualize their vision.
W. Clement Stone
Action is a great restorer and builder of confidence. Inaction is not only the result,
but the cause, of fear. Perhaps the action you take will be successful; perhaps
different action or adjustments will have to follow. But any action is better than no
action at all. Norman Vincent Peale
No action, no change. Limited action, limited change. Lots of action - Change occurs.
You see, in life, lots of people know what to do, but few people actually do what
they know. Knowing is not enough! You must take action. Anthony Robbins
An ounce of action is worth a ton of theory. Ralph Waldo Emerson
Many of life's failures are people who did not realize how close they were to success
when they gave up. Thomas Edison
If you have the will to win, you have achieved half your success; if you don't, you
have achieved half your failure. David Ambrose
